Style
Stoker has different styles for his different documents. At times, he will write with scientific diction to poetry the mindset of Dr. Seward of Dr. Van Helsing. He will use kind words with Lucy and Mina. And he will revert to mere statements when in comes to telegrams or news articles. However, part of his style remains invariable throughout his text. Diction pertaining to colors, specifically gray, are equally dispersed throughout the documents and help to symbolize either the forbearing darkness or another motif. Also, Stoker utilizes the hyphen to create double meanings within his work. One of the few sexual references he includes uses it very effectively:
"When the blood began to spurt out, he took my hands in one of his, holding them tight, and with the other, seized my neck and pressed my mouth to the wound, so that I must either suffocate or swallow some of the-- Oh my God! My God! what have I done?" (Mina's Diary 306)
He also utilizes puns to add a humoristic tone. Dr. Van Helsing often describes that he has a "grave duty" (219) or that "the stake we play for is life and death" (306).
His greatest use of style is the numerous symbols he embeds into his work from night, to fog, to color, etc. (See home page for more examples.)
